So, now let us know about the COMPUTER APPLICATION, also called Application software (an application):
Application software (an application) is nothing but a set of well designed computer programs that enable the user to perform a group of coordinated functions, tasks, or activities with the help of the execution of the system software, as any ‘Application software’ can only manage and integrates a computer’s capability but does not directly perform tasks that benefit the user.
If at all it is needed to be directly concerned with altering or managing the computer’s operating environment, then it is possible only with the ‘Utility Software.
In other ways, one can define an ‘APPLICATION SOFTWARE’ as an executable ‘Software Component’ or a tightly coupled set of executable software components (one or more), deployed together, that deliver some or all of a series of steps needed to create, update, manage, calculate or display information for a specific purpose.
The important thing to know is that the ‘SOFTWARE APPLICATION’ and ‘SOFTWARE COMPONENT’ are technical terms used to describe a specific instance of the class of application software for the different purposes of IT utilization and management.
Applications may be bundled with the computer and its system software or published separately, and may be coded as e.g. proprietary, open-source or university projects.
Some important illustrations of an application are: Word Processor; an Aeronautical Flight Simulator; a spreadsheet design and management system; painting, media players and nowadays very popularly the console games and so on.
‘APPLICATION SOFTWARES’ that are also much popularly called by the shortened form “APP” to refer to applications for mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets, the shortened form matching their typically smaller scope compared to applications on PCs.
An application can manipulate text, numbers, graphics, or a combination of these elements, but it is purely depending on the activity for which it was designed, as some application packages focus on a single task, something like word processing; and some others may deal multi tasks, which are called integrated software, which include several applications.
There are various versions of ‘APPLICATION SOFTWARES’ available for different platforms, something like; a Geography application for Windows, an Android application for education, or Linux gaming and some run on only on one platform causing the demand and creating popularity of that particular platform and that is why they are being known as a killer application or killer app.
